Ulysses Gomez Bellator MMA Video and Play by Play

I went out to corner my team mate Ulysses Gomez in San Antonio Texas for his MMA fight in Bellator Mixed Martial Arts Championships. ‘

For those of you who don’t know, Ulysses is the younger brother of U.S. World Cup soccer star Herculez Gomez.

Here’s the full video and play by play of his fight at Bellator on Thursday.

Check it out:

Travis Reddinger vs. Ulysses Gomez

Round 1

Gomez lands a sharp leg kick to start the action. Redding responds with leg kicks of his own. Gomez responds back with his own leg kick.  Another sharp leg kick by Gomez as both fighters are cautious. Gomez snaps a leg kick and Reddinger rushes forward with strikes. Gomez lowers his level and scores a double leg takedown. Gomez is in full guard and is unable to score with punches. Reddinger works his way back to his feet and rushes Gomez to the cage fence. Gomez clamps in a standing guillotine and brings Reddinger down to the mat with it.  Reddinger fights it off and breaks the choke. Gomez works his way back to his feet off the cage wall. The fighters are now trading punches in the clinch. Gomez lowers his level and scores another double leg takedown as the round comes to an end.

Round 2

Reddinger rushes forward again with strikes and Gomez lands another double leg takedown to counter the attack. Gomez postures up and begins landing kicks to Reddinger’s thigh. Gomez continues to land blazing kicks to the grounded Reddinger. Gomez finally slows the assault and Reddinger rises to his feet. Reddinger grabs a clinch, but Gomez reverses Reddinger into the cage. Reddinger reverses it back as the fighters trade knees. Gomez lands an outside trip and scores another takedown. Gomez postures up and pulls away, letting Reddinger get back up. Big overhand right by Gomez, but Reddinger shakes it off. Gomez is keeping his distance as Reddinger walks him down. The fighters are in the clinch and Gomez lowers his level to score another double leg takedown as the round comes to an end.

Round 3

Reddinger shows some urgency and misses with a few punches.  Reddinger continues to push forward but is struggling to find the mark. Gomez grabs a clinch as they tussle along the cage. Back to center, Gomez lands a right answered by a Reddinger knee. Gomez rushes forward and scores another takedown. Gomez is unable to make a pass from full guard and stands up, shifting back to his leg kick assault to the grounded Reddinger. Gomez lets Reddinger up, Reddinger rushes forward and Gomez takes him right back down to the canvas.  Gomez continues to struggle inside Reddinger’s guard and lets him back up. Reddinger lands a knee and Gomez lowers his level to score another takedown. Reddinger has an arm bar, but it isn’t tight.  Reddinger transitions to a triangle, but can’t seem to close it out.  Reddinger transitions back to an arm bar, but again Gomez is able to work his way out of the submission attempt and stands up as the bell calls an end to the fight.

Official Result

Ulysses Gomez def. Travis Reddinger via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Teammate Uylsses “Useless” Gomez coming up

Hey I’m getting ready to go corner my boy Ulysses “Useless” Gomez in Bellator .

Here’s and article from MMAJunkie that got picked up by Yahoo sports..

Fight Path: Ulysses Gomez out to prove he’s not “Useless” in Bellator tourney

Kyle Nagel, MMAjunkie.com Aug 26, 5:31 pm EDT

The Gomez family has its share of international athletic experience, but it was new to second-oldest child Ulysses Gomez in 2007, when the son of a furniture store owner and used-car salesman purchased his ticket to Turkey.

A former soccer player like his star brother, Gomez had built himself into a well-rounded fighter after he began training in 2001. He was successful in grappling tournaments before he tried Pankration, a fighting form with ancient roots that combined boxing and wrestling.

So there he was, in the 2007 FILA World Wrestling Championships, representing Team USA in Pankration.

“Somebody asked me how I thought I would do,” Gomez told MMAjunkie.com

Gomez found out soon enough. With a strong performance, he won a gold medal, and he was then ready for his mixed-martial-arts career.

After winning Tachi Palace Fights’ flyweight (125-pound) belt, the 27-year-old Gomez makes his debut next week in the Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight tournament, the next step in a career that has seen him go 6-1 using skills developed during his years of grappling, boxing and Pankration.

Following the athletic example set by older brother Herculez, who played for the United States in the World Cup this summer and has become a professional soccer star in Mexico, Gomez has blazed his own path in MMA, which he hopes can continue with his Bellator opportunity.

“People say, ‘This is the biggest fight of your career,’ but I hope not,” Gomez said. “I see it as the first step of many, hopefully taking me on to even more things after I’m done fighting. But for now, I want to keep improving and winning.”

A gifted family

Gomez was born in California to a family with a Mexican heritage. His parents owned a furniture store in Los Angeles before moving the family to Las Vegas when he was about 11 and finding work in dealing used cars.

His two brothers and two sisters all came in quick succession, and Gomez jokes about his family options based on his ethnicity.

“Being Hispanic, there are three things people do: fighting, soccer and construction,” Gomez joked. “Well, I don’t like soccer, and I don’t like yard work.”

But another family member took to soccer. Herculez Gomez, 13 months older than Ulysses, became a star in the sport and eventually became a scoring champion in the top Mexican league. Even six months before the World Cup began, he was barely on the U.S. team’s radar, but he performed well leading up to the picking of the teams.

An exhibition game near the final roster cuts fell on Ulysses Gomez’ birthday, which was a good sign. Herculez always scored on his birthday, he said.

The tradition continued, and Herculez Gomez’ goal helped him make the American roster for the world’s biggest sporting event.

“There’s something I noticed about him playing,” Ulysses Gomez said. “I watched him play for his (Major League Soccer) team once in Denver, and before the game you could see his mood change. It was real subtle, but he got real serious, and I could see it. I never felt like that when I played soccer.

“But that’s how I feel when I fight, like I’m a little nervous. But about an hour before, I get real serious and very focused. That’s how I know it’s for me.”

Years of training

By 2001, Gomez was ready. Aug. 1, in fact.

“A day that forever changed my life,” he said.

He had been renting UFC tapes and enjoying MMA. He had always told friends he felt he could be successful there, as well. So one day, he simply picked up the phone, called a gym and found a home.

Within months, Gomez started his career in grappling tournaments that continued for years with great success – to the point that tournaments would specifically request him. At his height, he was appearing nearly two dozen times per year.

Then he tried boxing, and then Pankration, with wins in both. Following the World Wrestling Championships in 2007, he returned home a champion having represented the country. Palace Fighting Championships, the successful California-based promotion that’s groomed dozens of notables, called and said the promotion wanted him for an event.

Looking for a new challenge, he accepted. He made his professional MMA debut in March 2008 and won his first two fights before taking on Rambaa Somdet in November 2008.

“Everything that can go wrong went wrong,” Gomez said. “I was heavy at the weigh-in, and I had to cut 12 pounds that day. I was in the hospital, and they put IVs in, and they said, ‘You shouldn’t fight.’ I said, ‘Man, I’m fighting.’

“I remember him dropping me in the first round, and we made it all the way to a decision, and he won; he really did. We were talking afterward, and I said, ‘I can’t believe he dropped me.’ My guys said, ‘Which time? He dropped you four times.’ I only remembered once.

“That showed me I could compete when I’m not even 100 percent.”

Gomez (6-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) then won four consecutive fights to earn his upcoming Bellator opportunity, where he meets Travis Reddinger (14-2 MMA, 0-0 BFC) in an opening-round fight of the eight-man tourney. But he’s hoping his career can continue with the experience he gained in multiple fighting techniques in multiple countries over the years.

He doesn’t want to live up to his nickname, “Useless,” which he was called by other children in school who couldn’t pronounce his name. Gomez facetiously adopted the nickname for his fighting career.

“You have to have some fun with things, not be too serious all the time,” he said. “That’s how you stay loose.”

Kendall Got Himself Kicked Off UFC 116 TV Card

Just saw this on MMA junkie..

Guess SpikeTV didn’t like what Kendall had to say..

Which SUCKS because I was looking forward to watchin my old buddy fight :(

Check it out:

A middleweight bout between Kendall Grove and Goran Reljic has been demoted to UFC 116′s un-aired preliminary card, and a light-heavyweight fight between Seth Petruzelli and Ricardo Romero has been promoted to its slot on UFC 116′s “UFC Prelims” special on Spike TV.

Kendall Grove Weighs In

Kendall Grove Weighs In

A source close to Spike TV today confirmed the change with MMAjunkie.

The source said Grove prompted the change after the fighter openly criticized the UFC’s longtime cable partner and their involvement in “The Ultimate Fighter.”

UFC 116 takes place July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Heavyweights Chris Tuchscherer and Brendan Schaub compete in the other “UFC Prelims” fight, which airs prior to the night’s pay-per-view main-card broadcast.

Grove, who was the season-three middleweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, earlier this week told Tapout Radio that Spike TV officials only care about ratings and getting “as much drama and stupidity out of us” as possible with little regard for the cast members’ careers.

Grove rejoined the radio show a few days later and apologized to Spike TV officials, UFC president Dana White and UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for passing off his personal feelings as fact. He said he “put my foot in my mouth” and thanked Spike TV officials for “giving me my shot” with the UFC.

Unfortunately, it appears it was too little too late with UFC and Spike TV executives, who now have relegated Grove (11-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and Reljic (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) to one of the event’s four un-aired slots.

“Kendall made his feelings clear about Spike TV,” the source said. “Besides, Seth has a great story and is a ‘TUF’ alum.”

Petruzelli (12-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) gets the TV spot in his first fight back in the UFC. The “TUF 2″ cast member, who made his biggest splash when he defeated Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson in an October 2008 EliteXC fight, recently re-signed with the UFC following a four-fight win streak in outside organizations. He takes on Romero (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who initially was expected to fight Steve Cantwell.

The latest UFC 116 card now includes:

MAIN CARD

* Champ Brock Lesnar vs. interim champ Shane Carwin (heavyweight title-unification bout)
* Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Chris Leben
* Matt Brown vs. Chris Lytle
* Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
* Kurt Pellegrino vs. George Sotiropoulos

PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)

* Brendan Schaub vs. Chris Tuchscherer
* Seth Petruzelli vs. Ricardo Romero

PRELIMINARY CARD (Un-aired)

* Kendall Grove vs. Goran Reljic
* Dave Branch vs. Gerald Harris
* Forrest Petz vs. Daniel Roberts
* Jon Madsen vs. Karlos Vemola

Hidden Camera Video: My 2nd Pro MMA Fight

Hey,

King David here.

I put together this little hidden camera video for you of my 2nd Pro Mixed Martial Arts Fight.

I won this MMA fight without even getting hit.

Pretty cool huh?

Check it out:

Here’s how I got my start in MMA

Enjoy this FREE Video:

When I first watched UFC I didn’t know where to train.

There were no blogs giving away 7 FREE MMA Videos ^^^^ (hint hint)

But one day my friend came up to me with his buddy and told me that his buddy trained Mixed Martial Arts.. You know that UFC stuff.

They said they we’re doing a tournament called GrapplersQuest that took place at a local high school and you could do submissions on your opponent.

I had never trained before but decided to sign up because my friend Ryan’s friend Hosea had bleached tips in his hair and I figured if THIS GUY can fight I certainly can!! (Hosea and I are now great friends by the way)

I didn’t have the money for classes but I would watch my friends train then go practice the moves I in the park at night after class.

My friend Ryan and I would wrestle in the grass. Sometimes Hosea would come too.

I ended up entering GrapplersQuest and competing in the Novice Division where I made it all the way to the finals.

I had never been that tired in my entire life and ended up losing in the finals due to exhaustion.

That set a FIRE off in me. I knew two things. 1. I had potential. and 2. I HATED losing.

Well several years later they’re out of the high schools and have moved into Mandalay Bay and hotels and casinos all across the country.

Even though I fight MMA on TV and have been around the world doing Mixed Martial Arts. I still compete in GrapplersQuest to this day I’ve become dear friends with the owner Brian Cimins and GQ even sponsors me because I got my start there.

It’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in my life and probably the best run tournament I have ever entered!

I’m not the only one either SO MANY UFC Fighters still compete in GrapplersQuest to this day. I can’t even name them all but you’ll see some of them in this video.

It’s real proof of what a great tournament GQ is!

Anyway enjoy the video and if you want to test your skill and see what it’s like to compete against someone of your own skill level or even step up and challenge the best GrapplersQuest is the place to do it!

They have divisions for every skill level and weight Mens,Womens,Kids,Masters ..everything. I can’t recommend GQ more highly. It’s where I got my start and my home to this day!

Click here to check out their Webiste, DVD’s and find a GQ near you
